Madelung’s disease, also known as multiple symmetrical lipomatosis (MSL) and benign symmetric lipomatosis (BSL), is a rare, progressive disorder characterized by the accumulation of benign fatty tumors in symmetrical patterns on the body. These lipomas are not encapsulated, and they can spread, cause disfigurement, and interfere with normal function. There is no known cause or cure. The only available treatment is surgical removal through lipectomy or liposuction, though they often return.
